Clutter and anxiety
It was Christmas 2016, and I was over it. I was stressed, working overtime from home (even though I was technically on vacation), and my home was constantly a disaster.
My husband was gone every other week, and I was parenting two toddlers alone the other weeks.
I have anxiety, and the stress of work and the chaos of my home sent me into regular panic attacks. It’s weird how your house being a mess can make you feel like a mess.
I wanted to cry. Every. Single. Day. I was miserable. I felt like a failure, and my crazy house was a visual reminder of my perceived failures as a mother and a wife.

A new start and a new home
Then I made a New Year’s resolution. Never in my life had I kept a New Year’s resolution, so it wasn’t anything too remarkable.
I figured it would make my January slightly more bearable. Maybe my anxiety would be kept at bay a little longer while I made minor improvements.
I was going to simplify. I didn’t know how. I didn’t really know why. I just knew it was something my soul (and my sanity) needed.
I started by decluttering my closet. I got rid of a few grocery bags of clothes in the first few days.

I decluttered my closet first
I then decided I had an embarrassing amount of clothes and a spending problem. This led to a one month no-spending challenge, specific to clothes.
One month, turned into a commitment for one year. (I know, it sounds crazy. Read my no spending challenge story for more details.)
Not buying clothes and realizing I had more than enough led me to cleaning out more bags of stuff. Before I knew it, I had cleaned out six van loads of stuff!

Clutter me crazy!
It was crazy. And relieving. I was putting aside at least 30 minutes three days a week to clear out another space.
You know how people get who don’t get their workout and feel like they NEED it?
That was me with decluttering. If I didn’t get my decluttering session, I could feel the anxiety of all our stuff creeping back up on me.
Clearing out the clutter in our home was life-changing. It helped me simplify my life in ways I didn’t know possible, and it all started with a half-hearted New Year’s resolution.
I now LOVE a good New Year’s resolution. I love the potential it can hold to change one’s life. It’s a fresh slate.
