Every time we visit a new city or need a special weekend activity, my girls and I like to research and find the best donut in town. It is a tradition for us. For this reason, when we planned our family vacation to San Diego, we had to find the best San Diego donut stop.
During our visit, we determined Donut Bar in San Diego to have the best service and the best donuts, and we consider ourselves donut aficionados. This place is out of this world!
Early Bird Gets the Worm
In search of the best San Diego donut stop, I pulled my reluctant husband out of bed early. I know most great donut shops sell out early, and the same rings true for the Donut Bar. We initially visited the Donut Bar on a Saturday, but the line was too much for my family to contend with on that day. Therefore, we postponed our visit until mid-week.
The location is in downtown San Diego, but parking was easy enough. There was a line, even mid-week, to get one of these mouthwatering delights. The location is small, with the line stretching out into the street and onto the sidewalk. There is a small seating area upstairs, but we opted to sit on some benches in an outdoor seating area at a nearby office building.
The location opens at 7 AM during the week and 8 AM on the weekends. We were there at 8 AM, and the line was impressive, especially for a Tuesday morning. Get up early, and get your adventures started. You will not be disappointed.
I was overwhelmed and anxious when we got to the counter, thinking we would be rushed to make a fast decision. There were numerous folks in there who knew exactly what they wanted. I also had two extremely excited little girls with me, and there was no way I could expect them to decide fast.
As soon I approached the counter, all of my apprehension with ordering quickly went away. The young lady behind the counter asked if it was our first time visiting, encouraged us to take our time, and explained every donut in detail. There were six people in our party, so we had quite a few questions!
The donut selection was impressive. They had yeast donuts, decorated and filled with unique and classic flavors. It was tremendously hard to choose just one donut per person. For that reason, we each selected a different donut choice. We planned to share a bite or two amongst ourselves.
These donuts are huge! My kids had a hard time consuming an entire donut, and that is saying quite a bit about two sugar loving kids.
Their menu changes regularly, and they sell out daily. Here is a glimpse at what you may find when you head out for a San Diego donut at the famous Donut Bar.
Strawberry Split Donut
I decided to go with the distinctive Strawberry Split Donut. It is a fluffy, sugared yeast donut split in half, filled with light, cloud-like whipped cream, and fresh, split strawberries. This donut is large, light, and will impress any donut lover.
Big Poppa Tart Donut
My husband opted for the Big Poppa Tart Donut. It had an entire Kellogg’s Pop Tart in it! The Pop Tart cooked while the donut cooked, so it was like eating a flavor-bursting jelly donut. It tasted like we were five years old all over again, enjoying a Pop Tart on a special Saturday morning when mom let us have a treat but ten times better. It was out of this world!
Other amazing choices
We also tried their Cake Batter Donut, Lemon Pistachio Donut, Homer’s Donut, and a few other specialties. They even have a bacon maple donut choice! There were a few reluctant participants in our group about waiting in line for a donut, but their attitudes turned around quickly once consuming these delicacies. Who doesn’t love a donut?!
Beer and Donuts
Beer and donuts are my two favorite things in the world. The Donut Bar recognizes this popular pairing, and every Friday and Saturday night, from 5 PM to 10:30 PM, they have an encore opening where you can purchase their amazing donuts and craft beers. I am in heaven.
If you are in search of a San Diego donut shop, I highly recommend the Donut Bar. It has a fun atmosphere, the staff is out of this world polite, and the donuts are to die for. Take your family to the Donut Bar before you go to the San Diego Zoo or Balboa Park. It is not that far away, and you will have a little sugar to fuel your day of exploring.
